Snowbound

Aside from a brief lull Tuesday--which was good timing, since it was our 15th anniversary and we were able to go out--we've been basically snowed in all week. And today: the ice.

A couple of examples:

(More up on Flickr.)

So far, we've not lost power, but I wouldn't bet on that lasting forever. Something like 200k people were without earlier today, and they're saying it may take days to get everyone back on. So I'm hitting the electronicsing hard while I still can. ;)

Yay! Here we have snow announced for tonight/tomorrow morning - but I don't think very much.

I've seen the weather reports for the Northwest and it looks harsh. I'm glad that so far your power has stayed on.

We usually get 1-2 midsize snows every year, but we rarely have more than 24 hours of downtime with it. This has probably been the worst since the big storm of '96 that destroyed an entire marina of boats when their shelter collapsed under snow weight.

Looks more like here than Washington! Good luck on the ice, though - when it's as thick on the branches as your photo shows, it's pretty serious. In our Ice Storm of 1998, power lines bringing electricity to the island of Montreal went down to the point that there was literally only one left, and the gov't began trying to figure out how to evacuate 3 million people from the island; turned out not to be necessary, but it was close. Hopefully nothing like that will happen where you are....

It looks like the worst is over! Things have started melting. Of course, if the rain comes, we're in danger of flooding. But that's normal for Seattle after a snow dump.

We had some flickering and a few brownouts, but didn't fully lose power, so I think we're good, unless there's another round of nastiness coming.

Good news! And I remember Seattle as being flood-prone from way back when I lived there briefly - hopefully that won't happen this time, though.... And good news about keeping the power on - it's a real drag to lose power in winter, because it gets really really REALLY cold, brrrrr.

I meant to check on you.

Have you lost power? We did last night, 3 AM to 11 AM. If it happens again, we have a fireplace and lots of camping gear.

We've managed to stay on!

Fortunately, if it does go out, we have two gas fireplaces that work even when the power's out, so we're good. Our gas range works, too, so we can keep cooking to some degree. Being deprived of electronic entertainment would be the worst of it!

Yeah I know.

My laptop battery is out, so this thing is no good without power.
So I will be up the creek without a paddle. Oh well. At least I have my ipod, until it batteries goes.
