Avoiding doing homework, so I thought I'd throw out a silly question for my flist:

What are your weird food quirks? Any strange combinations? Weird comfort foods?

My strange meal of late has been brown rice and cottage cheese, sometimes combined with scrambled eggs, and usually topped with a sprinkling of Bacos and freshly ground pepper. Not sure why this works for me, but it does.

A few other weird things:

I always have to have honey on Grape Nuts. No regular sugar. And I don't put honey on any other cereals (though it does go well with English muffins.)

Of late, have lost interest in carbonated soft drinks, with the exception of Pellgrino, which is what I order almost every time we go out, if the restaurant has it.

I also love nuts, with one exception: I detest cashews. I'll eat them if they're in a handful of mixed nuts or trail mix, but I don't seek them out. I prefer almonds and hazelnuts instead, and can eat vast quantities of the latter.

I don't like spicy Mexican food or chili, but I love Szechuan, and love slathering egg rolls in Chinese mustard. I also like spicy Indian food. I guess there's just something different about the chiles used in Asian cuisine that works for me when they don't work in fattier foods.

So, as it turns out, if you're ever out of milk when you need to make cake frosting, Bailey's makes an excellent (if slightly intoxicating) substitute.

In other news, I do happen to still exist. I came home early this week because M and my other anniversary (the day we started dating) was Thursday and I didn't feel like going to class Friday. I'm being a complete slacker this term because so few of my classes really interest me. At least not more than staying home interests me. My most important class is my features class, and 90% of my performance in that depends on whether my damned sources for my stories ever call me back.

I think I'm also kind of in this really resenting school sort of space right now, because I feel like it took me away from spending more time with my old lady. I feel like I'm always going to wonder if I could've given her more time if I'd been around more to sense what was going on with her. Now I just want to get school the hell over with and get back home and get back into the rhythm of my normal life.

At least I only have about 4 1/2 months left of this. Graduation is June 16, I have vacation (yay) plans for spring break, and I should be busy enough spring term (with any luck, back on the editing staff for the SPFH) so I won't dwell too much on things. It's just this term, I think, that's really kicking my ass, because I have two classes I give no shit about whatsoever, one more that I care about, but don't have enough to do in, and one class that I like, but that isn't going the way I want it to. It's kind of the opposite of my first term. I'm no longer panicked about fitting in or doing well in classes. I'm just bored out of my mind and frustrated with having a busy but mind-numbing schedule.

I'm clearly feeling domestic. Even after all of the cooking I did yesterday, I felt the need to break out the baking gear tonight, too.

M and I aren't visiting the parentals this year, and don't otherwise have plans, so we decided it's time to host.

So if any of y'all locals or semi-locals don't have plans, you're quite welcome at our place in Mill Creek. I've been told I cook well, and since I've fallen off the veg wagon, I can do the turkey thing, too--a la Sir Alton of Brown, if M has his way. I also cook up a mean Tofurkey, too, for those still eschewing dead bird.

We also have a ton of games and may do a marathon of something from our DVD collection, which includes all seasons of Lost, BSG and GA, plus a bunch of movies. The bar is fully stocked and I also make some great mocktails for those who don't indulge. If it's not raining, we may even fire up the hot tub, so bring your swimsuit! Also, if you're coming from afar, we have some crash space if you want to stay overnight. But be aware that you'll probably become cat furniture.

It's been ages since we've had a party, so we're way overdue. We'd love to see you. Feel free to bring partners, kidlets or random relatives--just let us know in advance how many you're bringing so we can plan for food amounts. Bear in mind that we have four cats, if anyone's allergic, and this is an openly queer household, if anyone gets nervous about such things.

Send me mail or comment here with your e-mail (if it's not on your info) and I'll add you to an Evite with all the details.
