Just found out that there may be overlap between the end of my current contract and when I'd need to be here if it gets extended (the guy I'm filling in for now comes back 1/28, and the guy I'd be filling in for after that leaves 2/8 or thereabouts.)

Which could mean enough free time for a trip to the UK for that event. :D

The only issue then is money, and as we're not currently budgeting for the contract extension, if that comes, we can probably swing it.

Gnarrrh. I hope this is possible. But I won't know for sure for a while, yet.

**ETA: Request to my UK peeps or those who have been there a lot**

With 12 days there, where would you recommend going? One weekend would be spent at the event (which is on the south coast) but the rest would be free.

Trying to see if this is possible budget-wise, and want to research transport/hotels for a possible tour itin. :)

Is this the Camber Sands weekend?

It would be worth spending a few days in London, and there are some lovely places along the south coast. It really depends on what sort of things you like doing. If you like old stuff, there are places like Stonehenge.

Yup! I'm still hoping I can make it work somehow, regardless of which Famous Folks are going to be there.

We're rather lazy sorts, so big adventuring isn't really our thing, but we do like lovely scenery and historical sites and museums and such. We do kinda want to go beyond the basic tourist stuff and maybe get a little more of a feel for the different regions and stuff, from a cultural standpoint.

If you like ancient landscapes, Wiltshire is wonderful. As well as Stonehenge you have Avebury and West Kennet Long Barrow, which is very impressive, and you could take a look at the wonderful 'Jurassic Coast' of Dorset, for some dinosaur related activity.

Right on. I love all our old stuff around here (all the ancient Native stuff is pretty fascinating, for one) and I'd love to see even more elsewhere.

I'll agree with everything Fred said re archaeological sites. Also, the Natural History Museum in London is awesome.

If you had the time to venture a bit further north, York is a lovely city, and has lots of old parts of town with old buildings crowded in on each other in narrow little streets. Plus there's plenty of archaeological sites and historic bits, as well as a variety of museums (the Yorvik Viking Centre is great, or at least it was several years ago when I last visited).

Sounds awesome. Thanks for the recs! I'm going to work out a rough itinerary to see if we can afford this. I really hope so! I'd love to meet y'all, if nothing else!
