Well, shit

So, with LJ laying off half its staff, that's putting everyone in a panic. And making it hard to do LJArchive backups.

However! Thanks to my packrat tendencies, I have an already-built archive already. Mostly. I've been doing e-mail comments since I started my journals, and I've never deleted any of those. So any entry I got a comment on is already fully archived in Outlook.

Now to just go back and self-comment on a bunch of entries that didn't have comments...

Truthfully, though, I don't think this is the end of LJ. There are too many users here and it's too active to actually be closed. It'll probably just end up being taken over by a smaller company or turned over to user management (!)

I admit that I'm pissed off, though. They dropped tons of cash into trying to make it a MySpace clone. And then when that failed, they tried to make it a Facebook clone. They should've just left it alone to begin with.

Thank you for this, I saw all these doomsday posts and had no idea what to make of it. I doubt anything will happen. You are very right about it being too popular to die. I think the best thing that could happen is it being turned over to a smaller company, someone who'll handle it better.

While I think backing stuff up is a good idea (I do it anyway) it looks like there were some flaws in the article.

So basically it looks like they're turning over all design and tech ops to Moscow.

I'm not sure what to think of this, really. I don't know who's been responsible for some of the ridiculous stuff they've pulled in the last couple of years (like the horrid redesign of the info page) so it could be good or bad.

Hmm, haven't backed up my posts generally - a few I've printed out to keep for myself, but not many. I hope lj doesn't disappear as I like the people I've met here, and would hate to lose 'puter touch with them! Including you, of course - I have your name and can find you on Facebook, but frankly I don't like Facebook. As some users said in the story about this lj thing happening, lj isn't a "social networking site" like Facebook, it's just a home to blog from....
