Yep. That's me.
I think utilitarianism is the only philosophy that acknowledges reality. Or, at least a particular point of reality that a lot of folks would like to pretend to themselves doesn't exist: The fact that none of us can survive solely on our own. At least not in modern society, we can't. A very rare few may be able to hole up in the wilderness and make their living hunting with their bare hands or what tools they can create on their own, but every one of the rest of us relies on millions of other people to get by. That coffee you had this morning had to be grown by someone, picked by someone, transported by someone, stored by someone... etc. It didn't just magically appear in your hand only by something you did.
If we do not cooperate, we as a species die. It's that simple. And that means that the strong among us have a responsibility--even if only to our own survival--to care for the weak.
