Saw this meme posted on a mb. It kinda picks up where the birth year meme left off.

The Soundtrack of Your Life
-Pick the one or two songs that best represent each year of your life.
-Link to or embed vids, if available.
-Include a note about what this song reminds you of, or highlights from that year.

I'm only embedding a few, because this is going to be long enough as it is. I'm also breaking it into chunks.

1971
As linked to before, "Imagine" is definitely the quintessential song from that year.

1972
I Am Woman - Helen Reddy
Despite the fairly traditional gender roles of my parents, I got a huge, huge dose of second wave feminism in my formative years. My dad was especially encouraging of this, for which I am forever grateful.

1973
Top of the World - The Carpenters
I distinctly remember singing this constantly when I was a wee thing. I can credit Karen Carpenter, Linda Ronstadt, Helen Reddy and Olivia Newton-John for a lot of my early vocal development, because I was forever singing along with their stuff.

1974
Tin Man - America
Although this wasn't really a big part of my childhood, this song is sort of emblematic of the culture and style I felt steeped in.

1975
Rhinestone Cowboy - Glen Campbell
Whatever I think of the man's politics, his heyday really imprinted on me. I can probably sing every one of his hits from memory.

A couple more songs from that year that stand out: Love Will Keep Us Together - Captain and Tenille and You're No Good - Linda Ronstadt (excellent live vid on this one, btw.)

Incidentally, this was a kickass year for music. Looking back at the top singles--holy crap. So many have become all-time classics.

1976
Convoy - C.W. McCall (amusing vid)
I can probably sing the entirety of the album this was on. Welcome to the trashier side of my childhood. ;)
Random trivia: Apparently the musical half of McCall's country rap was composed by none other than Chip "Mannheim Steamroller" Davis. Listening to it again, I can hear it. Heh.
Other influential music that year-- ELO, Fleetwood Mac and some early ABBA releases (more on that shortly.)

1977
Hotel California - The Eagles

Coming into their own after backing Linda Ronstadt (see above), this is the song everyone remembers from them. This vid is notable for the bit of Seven Bridges Road at the beginning. Awesome.

This was the year I really started digging into music on my own. I more fully discovered ABBA, but wasn't yet absorbed in it.

Some other memories of this year--I started spending some time hanging out with my dad at the radio station he worked at. I remember watching Saturday Night Live to keep me busy while he worked, and I also remember seeing someone's copy of one of Queen's albums sitting around and thinking it was really weird.

Oh, and yes, I saw Star Wars. :)

1978
The Gambler - Kenny Rogers

I repeatedly listened to his Greatest Hits album that year.

However, this (the whole movie) was the real cultural emblem for me this year:

I also started listening to Billy Joel.

1979
Heart of Glass - Blondie

The importance of pop culture to one's coolness factor was rising at my school, and dressing like Debbie Harry was a key to that.

And, what Gen Xer doesn't immediately have a visceral response to My Sharona?

(So much so, in my case, that I was just compelled to dance around my apartment... gah...)

A few more Pop Musik - M. That and Cars were probably the genesis of my lust for techno.

Next decade coming up...

Love Will Keep Us Together - Captain and Tenille

Currently in use as a Telus ad (which actually is the maker of our cell phone, which we chose solely on the basis of their oh-so-lovely ads, literally the only time in my memory where an ad actually influenced my purchasing decisions).

Not surprisingly, I actively avoid pretty much all your 1970s choices {g}, except that "Hotel California" is a guilty pleasure for me (though I like the Gypsy Kings' 1980s version better) and Blondie was always fun. (ditto "Pop Musik," one of the few singles - as in 45s - I have from that era; except for "Best Friend's Girl," always hated the Cars though).

Hmmm, gonna have to look at this meme myself, obviously!
