The Project of DOOM has begun.
I'm currently going through about NINE years' worth of video, pics and documents stored on about six different places all over our home network. This is probably around a terabyte of data. Yes, really.
Most of this, of course, is old fandom stuff, much of which is in multiple copies in different places due to making multiple backups at different times. I consolidated a lot of this stuff a while back and burned it off, but there's still a bunch left over that I need to clear out. Eventually, I'm probably going to have to just assume that it's all safe somewhere and just dump it all, excepting the photos and video I shot myself.
Still, even if I get rid of all the fandom shit, I still have vast quantities of personal files everywhere, all of which needs to be weeded out and then safely backed up/burned off, etc. (Most of this stuff has been mirrored, in case a drive fails, but we really don't have a specific backup.) Because of the sheer enormity of this project, I've been putting it off for a long time. And now that I'm up to my ass in it, I kind of want to run in fear.
Stage one was consolidating all the stuff on my local drive. That's mostly done. Stage two was moving a bunch of stuff off of a network drive over to my local drive for further consolidation. That's done. Stages three through six are similar, and in progress. The final stages involve the weeding out, which will mean opening and scanning probably several thousand docs of various sorts, and then the backup.
I'll probably be on this for the next several days, though I'll also be doing some other things, like starting on cards and doing a few more batches of cookies. But mostly, yeah, I'll be up to my ass in ancient debris of the digital kind.
Such are the woes of an intractable packrat. Pity me. :(
