Well, I applied today for that spiffy but expensive place in Fairhaven. I got keys and went and checked it out. It's actually a very small apartment -- the bedroom will only fit a twin -- but I love the style and the fact that it's brand new, plus in a new building which has (currently empty) retail space on the bottom level. Having lived in drive-only locations for most of my life, the idea of being able to walk a few blocks and find a zillion things to do (and buy) is interesting. This particular unit is a corner, which faces inward, toward the courtyard, which will mean a little bit less noise, hopefully. Oh, and as far as I can tell, most of the rest of the building is condos owned by seniors. Or at least people a good generation ahead of me. I can deal with that. No loud parties, no screaming babies, no kids playing tag at 5 am. I only have one shared wall, too -- in the bedroom, unfortunately, but I think I'm going to get a futon and I can sleep in the living room, too, if it becomes a problem (or if Mike comes to visit. :D )

There are issues, of course, besides just the cost (which we can manage, if tightly) and size (which isn't so bad; it means I won't have to buy as much furniture to fill it.) One minor annoyance is that it sits at the bottom of a hill. A gentle one, to be sure, not even near the grade of the hill I'm on now. But that'll mean a bit more effort for my hiking. Not that that would necessarily be bad for me. Considering all the walking I'll need to do now that I found out the campus shuttle stops running at 6p (I'll probably be working on the paper well past that) I might as well get used to it, even though it's going to mean a lot of pain and probably a few bouts of respiratory distress, especially when it gets cold. A flu shot is going to be absolutely necessary this year and I'll probably have to ask the doc about refilling my inhaler, which I have successfully avoided using in quite a while because I haven't had bronchitis and I try to avoid doing stuff that will make me breathe hard. Just kinda like that whole oxygen thing, ya know.

Someone else had checked out keys for the apt., so there's a chance I might not get in. I scrambled to get the application done this aftn. and get Mike's signature on it and get it faxed off before 5. I do have a few more options if it comes down to it, but I really hope this works, just because I want to get this part over with and get down to the business of stuffing my head. Sooo much to do in the 8 days before classes start. Gah. And it doesn't help that the Sims 2 expansion comes out tomorrow. I'll have to save that as a treat for a few hours when I'm waiting for something else to happen. I did spring for a small book of architecture porn, though-- a nice pictorial guide to American styles from 1600-1945.
