Random Observation
You know, I think I'd actually begin to worry if stupid, hateful and petty people liked me.
I feel quite honored that the people who like me are some of the most intelligent, creative, generous, kind and loving people I've ever had the fortune to meet, and moreover, that they like me for the right reasons, and not just because of petty, shallow or pointless things. Who wants to be liked because of their looks? Looks fade. Who wants to be liked because of their job? Jobs change. Who wants to be liked because they can be creatively mean to other people? That gets very old after a while, and the bitter, nasty attitude that underlies it usually ends up lashing out at the people around them eventually anyway.
If some halfwit dickhead like Dubya ever liked me, I think I'd feel insulted.
It really is better to be hated for who you are than loved for who you are not.

After all, who am I to judge anyone as a halfwit dickhead? That is not for me. There may be some people who sometimes act like fuckwits, but many of them have many admirable qualities as well, especially after they've had their coffee. I'd rather think that everyone has great potential for both much love and much hatred, and that when someone seems to do an act of great hatred or ignorance, it's also in that person to do whatever is needed to fix that. That may be idealistic of me, but I'm in an idealistic mood at this time of day.
That said, I think I agree with you. It is fabulous to be loved, hated, respected, or at least recognized for qualities that are intrinsically you and not for anything more peripheral than those qualities.
