An annoucement, because I think it's necessary:
I am proud to be politically correct, as much as I can be. I know I'm not perfect in this regard, but I try to learn from my mistakes when I make them.
I believe in sensitivity to others' feelings. I believe words can and do hurt, and that people need to be careful with them around people who are members of disenfranchised or oppressed groups. I don't believe it's funny to make fun of personal traits someone has that they have little to no control over such as race, ethnic background, gender, orientation or body configuration.
I believe a person's heart, and words and actions matter far, far more than their vital statistics. I do believe that a person's culture or subculture of origin can have an effect on their behavior, and sometimes it's a negative one, but I do not believe that any intrinsic trait anyone carries should be used as a basis for judging them, unless they themselves make an issue of it.
Or, in philosophical language, I'm a constructionist, not an essentialist.
If you disagree with any of the above, please de-friend me now.
