I have extremely mixed feelings about the mommy track. Friends from college are getting tenure and taking sabbaticals and getting second master's degrees or post-doc certificates or grants for their fancy scientific research. My baby brother is a Real Live Author. And I? Have been working at the same elementary school for TWELVE YEARS, albeit in different roles. I have 3 kids and I earned my National Boards. Sometimes I feel like a total rockstar, sometimes I feel like a walking stereotype.
The truth is somewhere in between, of course. I know I'm making a difference for more than my family, but I'd like to think a little bigger. Here's hoping that can come later. After a day of teaching and parenting, I don't have any creative energy left to actually create. The teacher schedule is great for bonding with the kids, but sometimes I'd rather spend the time in a Cognitive Sciences PhD of my own.
