As a break from my plunge into Academic Paper Hell today, a thoughtful question:

How many people on your flist are actual friends? If you have other Web presences (MySpace, Facebook, etc.) note those, too.

You may define "friend" as you like. No need to name the people in question--just a count.

My definition: Someone with whom I have shared at least a few emotionally and personally significant moments and who has shared such of theirs with me, and with whom I am still in at least somewhat regular contact (at least once or twice yearly), however that contact happens. I tend to lean toward people whom I've at least met in meatspace, but that's not an absolute criterion.

By this definition: 45-ish of the 90 I have as mutual friends. Probably only a handful I would consider current close friends, but most of the disconnect with the rest is due to circumstance (mostly my being up here in the boonies and having little time/opportunity for socializing) rather than any inherent incompatibility. I miss the hell out of a lot of those people these days.

On my Facebook account: Eh. Two or three of the 32 classmates I have friended. I could definitely see more becoming actual friends were we in different circumstances, and I do hope to stay in touch with some after I graduate, but as things are, nah. Just those few for now.

On my MySpace: seven, all of whom overlap with one of the other groups. Several of my MySpace "friends" are bands and such. I probably should hunt down more people there so I don't look so pathetically friendless.

About half of the people on my friends list are people I would consider actual friends. About a quarter more are people I have social interaction with, but too infrequently to call friends, and the rest are pretty much people I don't have any social interaction with, but would like to. For the most part, I don't friend people I don't know.

No MySpace or FaceBook here, only lj - but a history of earlier avatars, RockNet on CompuServe in particular. That said, one old RockNet pal that I met in person 16 years ago; one lj friend whom I've known since we were 15-year-old high school students in 1970s Berkeley (come to think of it, I've known her since before you were born!). Everyone else on my flist I've never met in person or talked to on the phone or had any contact with outside of lj. Which is fine with me, butthey're all people I'd like to meet in person sometime, circumstances allowing! I don't see any of my flist as being potentially someone I wouldn't want to know in person. Then again, I don't roam lj for friends, haven't joined any groups (other than HOBLMA, 'cause of the pics {g}) and see my lj as a place to vent. Those who've responded to my vents are people I'd probably like in rl; being low profile has its advantages {g}...

LJ: I know only one person on my flist in RL, the rest, save 1 or 2, I talk with on and off via LJ and other venues. I'd like to get to know them all better.

MySpace: I know three in RL, the rest fall into the same category as above.
