Finally, after several weeks of getting Netflix discs of each season, we have finished watching Avatar.
And I'm really impressed. This is no ordinary kids' cartoon in any way, shape or form. The world and its culture/magic/martial arts are truly unique and deeper than one might expect. Much of the usual Hero's Journey stuff is in there--lots of daddy issues and suchlike, too. But the execution really is spot on. It's also a lot funnier than one might imagine for these things, too. There are also a lot more complex emotional and moral issues than usual--some of the philosophical questions are very adult indeed.
I don't know enough about traditional anime to assess how it might compare, but in terms of anything I've seen--Western or no--I think it's really quite brilliant. I highly recommend it.
Oh, and Toph is all kinds of awesome. :)
