Bits and pieces
I kind of feel like I haven't gotten much done at the house this week because I've only added ~15 boxes to the various stacks o' stuff-to-store. I feel like I'm behind schedule or something. (Which I kinda am, since the storage pod is showing up tomorrow and I'm nowhere near ready to start loading it. Fortunately, it can sit in my driveway as long as it needs to.)
But most of the week's effort has been spent on two things: My office and photo albums/frames, and both projects require a lot more attention to detail than just chucking stuff in a box and being done with it.
One of the reasons I wanted to do this move is because of my packrat tendencies. I normally don't get rid of stuff until I move. And, well, that means I've had nine years to accumulate a lot of useless (to me) crap, and become horribly disorganized.
I could push myself to pack up faster, but I'd be in danger of packing things I really don't want or need anymore, and then filling up yet another house with boxes I'll never unpack or bags of stuff I'll "decide about later," and I really don't want to go there. I don't mind being a bit of a clutterbug--the idea of living in some sterile, stripped-down "modern" dentist's office makes my skin crawl--I just don't want my place to look like one of those hoarding nightmare things they mock on home shows.
So, even though it's slow going, I'm taking the time to look at every item in every room to make sure I still want it, and in cases of rooms with a lot of small, individual items, like paperwork and trinkets (hello, office), that's a LOT of required time.
Though the progress isn't immediately visible, there has definitely been some. My desk and its hutch are all totally cleared out now, as are two bookcases, half the closet, most of the bulletin boards, all the action figures and a cart that was housing stacks of printer supplies and to-file piles. All that's left in there now is the other half of the closet, the filing cabinet (that's a day in itself!) and the rest of my fandom ephemera, most of which is already nicely sorted and can just have labels slapped on it.
The downside is that the upstairs hallway is now a scary riot of paper shopping bags: recycling on one side and give-away/sell stuff on the other. Eep! At least it'll all be gone soon.

Also, if I may reiterate my call for assistance: I'm at the house almost every afternoon now, and will be for some time. I will gladly buy lunch for anyone who wants to come keep me company and maybe help tote a few of said bags downstairs to the garage.
