Random Saturday questions
Most of the "cool" eras of history have been thoroughly mined for fantasy treatment. Most commonly seen are what I call "foofy dress" eras: Medieval, Renaissance, Edwardian, Victorian, etc. And nearly always European. Anne Rice, of course, managed to mine NOLA history for her stuff and made it work. And there are smatterings of other things here and there, plus alterations of history (steampunk, etc.) and entirely weird hybrid shit (Firefly.) There is also plenty of modern-set fantasy, too.
But I think the genre is ripe for another era and/or geographical region to explore and exploit. New ancient myths to reinvent. New fashions and battle technologies to create. New customs, language and art of the day to take into account.
So, my questions to you, flisty sorts: What era should fantasy (and perhaps SF) writers/filmmakers/artists next delve into? What hasn't been overexplored? What are some of the cool historical mythologies that could be mined for fantasy stories?
