*yawn*

Back from my first night editing. All in all, not too bad--about 6 1/2 hours of work. The first four were spent doing the final copy read. I was a little irritated at how many ugly errors had slipped through in the several editing passes that had already gone. Kind of makes me wonder what horrible shape some of those stories were in before they went through section and copy editing. Probably the highlight of the evening was getting to tell the sports editor that he spelled Matt Hasselbeck's name wrong. Heh.

The print edition was put to bed--sent to the printer--around 11. Apparently, that's the earliest in several quarters, and far earlier than any first edition (of the term) has been in recent memory. The streamlined system our new EIC and advisor have set up is working really well. I did catch a few errors in the final copy that I hadn't caught before--mostly in captions, plus one error that went in after I'd already sent in my corrections. Still, the paper should be in fine grammatical shape, overall.

The online edition was a bit of a pain in the ass. I have to wait until the print edition is finalized, and then go strip the text out of the InDesign files to upload on the host's forms. Now that I know how all that works, I can get it done faster next time. A few things didn't quite work out, like images. And I can tell that the full overhaul is going to be a headache. I guess I'll see.

For now, bed calls.
