I've successfully avoided getting the Creeping Crud so far this year, and have been waiting for the other shoe to drop. Well, it dropped. I've been running myself ragged since I got here, doing a ton more walking than I usually do, and getting worn out and dehydrated and all that, and I think my immune system took a hit and I got it. I started feeling tired and feverish yesterday, and today has been pretty nasty, with everything above my neck feeling itchy and swollen and congested. Bleh. I went to only one panel today because I felt so crappy.

It was a good panel, though. It was on blogging v. journalism, and the general consensus was in favor of citizen media. Very cool. Also picked up a cool book on the same sort of subject: We the Media Will probably read through that on the ride home. Not looking forward to surviving 6 hours on airplanes tomorrow feeling like this, though. Hoping I have some capacity left for my final Thursday, too.

It's been a good trip, though. Kinda cool being surrounded by all these geeky creative types, in a non-fandom sort of atmosphere. I didn't think it would feel so different from fan-aimed events, but there really is a clear difference in tone between creators and fans. There's overlap, too, of course, but I've found that the people here tend to understand more about what it takes to make media work, and ask smarter, more in-depth questions. There's definitely fannishness going on, of course, but it tends to be reciprocal. As in "oh, man, I love your DP's work" "Oh, really? Yeah, well, he loved what your sound guy did." Mutual geek love. It's quite cool. :) I love this kind of energy. Being around smart, creative people always makes me feel just a little bit drunk. There's almost a palpable buzz in the air when people are coming together and having a meeting of creative minds and souls. It's kind of like the smell of sex. Maybe it's geek pheromones or something. Whatever it is, I like it.

I had a really funny experience along these lines Saturday night. I was waiting in like to get in to the Hooligans party, and there was a couple of young geek boys behind me, chatting away about random things. One of them was talking about the picture of a sheep he has as the wallpaper on his phone, and he was getting teased about that. I started joining in on the conversation, and the next thing you know, the three of us have decided we should make a movie called Vampire Lambs from Outer Space, and are in the midst of brainstorming the trailer and promo campaign. We were joking, really. Mostly. But it was funny that if we had wanted to, we really could've run with the idea. The desire to put ideas into motion is something that's just inherent in naturally creative people, and it's just different to have conversations like that with people who think that way than with people who are more end-user sorts.

Off to bed. Will be in touch briefly tomorrow, but probably won't be back up to speed until late Thursday.
