So, the city may not sleep, but the Hilton’s internet connect apparently does.
I’m sitting in the lobby bar, in a last desperate attempt to get a wireless connect somehow. Nada.
To recap: After an icky 5 ½ hour flight which involved airport delays on both ends, I had a lovely ride with the fablous NaT over to the hotel. Far from being intimidating, the city so far hasn’t been nearly as scary as I was afraid it would be. It’s bigger, and the buildings are taller, but it’s not much different, generally, than SF, LA, Toronto, Vancouver or Seattle, all of which I’ve spent a decent amount of time crawling around and getting into trouble in. The worst that’s happened so far, aside from my icky net connect problem, was getting bugged by some folks near Times Square to buy sunglasses.
My hotel is at 6th (Avenue of the Americas, which isn’t actually on my cel’s locator map—go fig) and W 54th, which is pretty darned close to Times Square and Rockefeller Center, both of which I’ve passed within spitting distance of. I woke up late (still on Pacific time. Well, and I was up til 3am playing the Sims ) and had a lovely meal at their café—two small quiches with a marinated vegetable salad which was absolutely heavenly. I don’t really like squashes and peppers, but this was amazing. The marination took all the bitterness out of the yellow and zuchini. It also had some fat white beans and kalamata olives. Yum Then I set out in search of shoes, because the shoes I’d intended to wear around here were nowhere to be found when I left (looks quizzically at Dimitri) so I’ve been running around in the wonderful but torn to shreds espadrilles I bought for the Honolulu trip (and wore to their nubs pretty much the whole time I was there.)
Also was in pursuit of a few other necessities. So I set out down 54th and ended up going the wrong direction (I was aiming for 5th, and found 7th instead) and walked up. Ended up within a block or so of Times Square (where Broadway and 7th converge) and took a turn into a souvenir/electronics store where I perused postcards (both pre and post-9/11 versions) bought a guidebook (since I was too stupid to buy one before I left) and a cf card, since for some reason the one I brought with me wasn’t reading correctly (something I later fixed) I then tried to figure out where the hell I was, and head back in the direction of 5th. I found a drugstore (woot!) and the shoe store I was originally looking for (and a successful purchase there! Yay!) and stopped into a Bunns and Noodle on my way back to pick up a Village Voice. At that point I was tired and footsore (having not actually switched to my spiffy new shoes, so I bucked up and hailed a cab (yay me) who was probably confused as to why I was taking a cab for 7 blocks. Hey, he got a $2 tip, he shouldn’t complain.
Got back to the hotel and decided to wrestle with the net connect again, since it hadn’t worked the night before (even their web tv didn’t work, because the damned keyboard didn’t have batteries. Grr) No dice. Called their tech support, still no luck. Spent plenty of time on the phone with Mike and no luck there, either. Well, except it was nice to talk to him, since I miss the hell out of him. So I figured maybe the problem is with the room’s modem or something, so I asked to switch rooms.
Still no net connect in my new room, but DAMN the view is a thousand times better. I can even see a snippet of the harbor if I stretch my neck.
Still feeling net withdrawal, I decide maybe I should hit the business center. She, conveniently, knows nothing about the in-room connections, and also is about to go on her lunch hour. And they want $10!!!!! For every 15 minutes!!!! *dies*
So, I’ll suffer. No net in the lobby, no net in the room. Apparently no one in this building uses their in-room net connect on a Sunday. With luck, maybe it’ll be fixed tomorrow, when the “real” people need their connections. If not, well, Kinkos or Starbucks will get a visit from me.
More from me later. For now, I’m working on a bowl of spicy bar snacks and my second Malibu and diet. And there’s football on the tv. Can’t beat that.

Good news: my puter works at the hotel's business center, even though it still doesn't work in my room. Guess I'll go talk to the front desk again about changing rooms. Bleh.
I ran out of my perky pills, since I was a dork and forgot to count the right number of days when I was putting them in the bottle. So it's caffeine all the way for me. That should be fun. :/
How fucking adorable was Dom on Sharon? "darling" indeed. Heh. Love him. Hope to get a chance to at least say hi tonight, though I'm going to be sure to behave myself. I imagine just about everyone will be mobbing the big name stars anyway. Madonna apparently will actually be there, she was doing a book signing thing earlier today, so she's in town, at least.
Off to make a feeble attempt at catching up on email.
