So here we are. Yeah, I know I said I wasn't going to be online, but I figured a mass "wish you were here" might be in order.

Yesterday's flight was pretty good, all considered, except that there was a medical emergency on the plane, so we got to see the flight staff ask around for a doctor (they found three) and rig an IV by hanging it from an overhead luggage bin. I've discovered I like wide body planes. Much more room to move. The food wasn't bad, either. We saw a spectacular rainbow over one of the mountains as we came in.

Checking into the hotel was a nightmare, however. They didn't have our room ready since we were an hour and a half before regular checkin time, so we had to sit around and wait for that, while about 8 zillion people bustled around us checking out and some whacked-out haole stormed through the lobby yelling about security. Then it turned out that we didn't get the room we'd reserved. Apparently when their website says "Ocean Front Deluxe Rainbow Tower" it actually means "Parking lot view room next door to a couple of screaming kids *facing* the Rainbow Tower." Hilton corporate customer service is apparently closed on the weekends, so it'll be Monday before I can read them the riot act.

It could be worse, I suppose. We actually have two views: the balcony overlooking the parking lot, and a bit of the mountains in the disance if you lean out a little, and the one over the desk which is full of the building we were supposed to be in. And the room is pretty nice otherwise: Minibar, fridge, dsl (when we thought we were only getting dialup) decent room service. Last night we sat at one of the bars on the beach and imbibed while watching the sunset, then went back up to our room to listen to the Friday night jubilee thingy. We actually were able to see a few of the fireworks go off. We're still on Pacific time, so we crashed early.

This morning, we got our free breakfast buffet, which was nice, and then set out on a shopping expedition (Mike forgot to buy books before we left) We found ourselves in a huge traffic jam, due to the Aloha Festival parade which had just started. We watched that for a little while and then drove around, getting our bearings, marveling at cool buildings (we got some good pics of some of them for ya, Matthew) and enjoying our convertible Mustang. We had a scary little lunch at a place called Zippy's. Their menu can only be caIlled Hawaiian fast food. Burgers, plate lunches, yakisoba, mashed potatoes and spaghetti. I had a tofu burger, which was amazingly tasty, if totally frightening to look at.

This afternoon, we returned to the hotel, where I discovered the horror that will be the rest of the time here: They're running the Mrs. America Pageant from the hotel this week.

Aside from being horribly tempted to crash the thing and yell "this is what a real married chick looks like!" on national tv, I can think of about several thousand things I would rather do than watch a bunch of Cliniqued and Atkinsed Mrs. Biffs sit around at the pool while they size up their competition. Some of the things I'd rather do actually include undergoing non-anesthetised dental surgery and listening to the collected works of The Judds.

So, aside from doing plenty of things outside the hotel, I'll probably be spending most of my vacation playing The Sims while I stare out the window at the Rainbow Tower, and the snippets of ocean I can see beyond it. Oh, and having enough loud sex to scare the evil brats next door into shutting the hell up. With luck, maybe the Mrs. and their entourages won't be too bad. And if they get on my nerves, I'll just go down to the pool in all my cellulite and stretch mark big-ass glory and lovingly, erotically eat ice cream and drink chi-chis while I soak up the rays of their envy.
