I should be in bed. At the moment, the various bureaucratic nightmares involved in making travel plans and trying to figure out what courses I should/can take next term are just pissing me off.

I'm not 100% sure I'm going to get into UW, because their postbac admissions are so tight. I have a few other options (none of them all that appealing, but still...) I won't be hearing back about whether I can get in or not until June or July. Which means that if I don't get in, I have to figure out when/how to apply somewhere else, and that may set me back a year.

So, the dilemma is this: what the hell do I do in the meantime? What do I take next term and summer (or beyond, if I have to wait to get in somewhere else.) I'm taking the first level course, now, which is something I'd need no matter what program I'm in. But then what? I can't take newswriting courses until I'm in a program. Same with most of the 400 level stuff. Under normal circumstances, I'd be using this time to get general edl stuff out of the way, but I'm more or less done with all of that, and the requirements for it vary enough between schools that I don't want to waste time and money taking something I need one place which wouldn't do me any good somewhere else. This is the big problem with UW's program, actually. They require three non-Journo courses -- Econ, History and Government -- as part of the major, but none of the other schools do. So if I took, say, Poly Sci 202, it might well turn out to be a giant waste of time and money if I don't get into UW.

I've been trying to find courses that don't require me to be in a program, that are also similar across all of the programs. There are courses in Media law and ethics, for instance, in everything. But those are higher-level courses that I need to have taken more stuff in the department to be prepared for.

Complicating matters is the fact that I'm going to have trouble finding the specific classes I need outside of UW's extension program. Since the community colleges only cover lower-level classes, they don't have much in the way of other communications courses for me to take. And UW's extension is expensive as hell. So I don't want to waste any classes I take there.

Meh.

Guh. College can be a pain in the ass sometimes, especially when you get stuck in the bureaucratic Department of Admissions.
