Massive pet food recall.

Includes some well-known brand names and a bunch of store brands.

I'm more than a little creeped out by this, because I KNOW there are some things on that list that KB ate in the month before her death, when we were trying to get her weight up. She was mostly eating Fancy Feast and her dry prescription food, but when she stopped eating, we were trying anything and everything to get her to eat. I know she had kidney problems anyway, but she had actually been doing well up until mid-December. I wonder if what was in this stuff sped up the deterioration. I have no way to be sure, of course, but I'm still definitely upset.

Oh no! Yeah, I'd be wondering about that, as well...

We know we fed some of those brands to Polly during the past few months, but she hasn't had any more problems than usual. Of course, this morning she scarfed down her food and promptly threw up in a spectacular fashion, something she doesn't actually do normally. You know, just to make us extra nervous... even though we don't currently have any of the known tainted brands. (I actually think it may be a side effect to her having run out of water sometime in the night -- I can't believe it got so low without us noticing!)

What creeps me out is that there have been no Canadian complaints. It's only the American pets that are being affected. Was it a problem in shipping? What would cause a weird distinction like that?

Okay, I just looked at the list again and realized that we do, in fact, have one of the brands in question. It wasn't on the earlier lists I'd found, which were obviously incomplete (at the time, the company's website was down). She hasn't had any of it for a few days and I'm definitely getting rid of them.

Thankfully they're not her sole canned food diet source... we normally feed them Purina Pro-Plan, and only give her other stuff sporadically, to keep her from getting bored (since we medicate her food, we actually have to cater to her finicky whims to get her to eat the stuff).

Bugger.

They actually make one of her favorites: Beef and Egg Skillet.

I think I'll be watching her like a hawk for the next little while, to make sur nothing's wrong.

I'm guessing it's a regional manufacturing/distribution thing. It could be that the plant or distribution center that serves Canada goes through a different process because of different regulations for pet food, or even just because of the different labeling.
