Gnnnah...

Fuck. I want to shop.

And I can't, at least not until I finish doing our taxes. (And hopefully finagle a few more deductions)

Depressing thought of the day:

Art in and of itself is not financially self-supporting in the US. Art has to be created to please the masses if it wants to support itself, or be sanitized for the government if it wants grants. People no longer support art because art itself is no longer appreciated by our culture. Entertainment is appreciated, and that's fine-- there's a difference between the two, and one which I understand. But people don't have the time, education or depth of thought for art anymore. And I don't mean capital-M Message art, either, but just... the performing arts, the visual arts. Beautiful, refined, well-done things. Opera and classical music and dance and museums... it's all failing financially right now because no-one appreciates these things anymore. Everyone's been dumbed down in corporate monoculture. Everything is all WalMart, or its upscale equivalents like Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware. Real beauty-- the beauty that comes from someone loving what they do, and not just doing it for a paycheck-- is all but gone.

This is why I love my movies. They're art, but art that also entertains, so they've managed to financially survive. Yet PJ and co, as well, have had to make sacrifices in their art for the sake of money. They have had to compromise who they are, compromise their personalities and artistic vision, to please the bottom line. Even something so beautiful is still a little bit of a whore.

But aren't we all? We all have to hide who we are, we all have to compromise our principles. We all have to do things that feel wrong to us to survive. We all have to sell little bits of our bodies and souls to buy our way in the world.

I just wish art were there to redeem us.

I've always wanted to do an acapella arrangement of this song.

Anyone with me?
