Have you ever noticed:
Conservatives tend to refer to liberals as freaks, nutjobs, crazy, etc.
Liberals tend to refer to conservatives as willfully stupid, arrogant and heartless.
I personally think I'd rather be a little crazy than stupid. And I'd definitely prefer to be thought of as the former than the latter.
Visionaries are always ahead of their time. The dreams and ideas they have are always considered out there, and fantastical by the people who seek to maintain the status quo (usually because the status quo's power structure puts them at the top of the food chain.) Nearly every single person we in modern times consider a genius, from Einstein to Tolkien, was usually considered batshit by their contemporaries. Often truly visionary people died before their work was ever appreciated. I often wonder what it was that kept them going, kept them working when so much of the world just wasn't supportive of what they were doing.
This isn't, of course, to say that everyone who has a vision which is contrary to the status quo is worth supporting -- the unabomber, the Waco Wacko, etc. But for those whose visions and work aren't actively harming other people, I think we should pay more attention to people who go outside the mainstream, and who are compelled to operate as if they were living in the future, rather than glorifying people who insist on living in the past.
