Always boom tomorrow

So, feeling rather icktastic--remnants of lost sleep thanks to a migraine of yesterday--I decided we should stay home today instead of heading out to socialize.

This turned out to be both a good and bad decision.

Bad because it turns out that about three dozen people within a 10-block radius, including our next-door neighbors and one of the houses across the street, had decided to put on their own massive explosion display.

Good because said people were largely idiots, and there were a few close calls from stupidly placed shells. Including one that exploded in someone's back yard.

Brilliant.

I will NEVER understand why it's legal anywhere for civilians to fire off anything that leaves the ground. I don't mind if people want to be stupid and blow themselves up, but when your explosives start coming within five feet of my front lawn? Yeah. It's my business.

At least it's finally calming down, now. The poor cats have been pacing nervously all day.

We had that problem in our old house every 4th of July, to the point where we simply turned the hose on and pointed it at our neighbor's house, oops, uh, we pointed it at the cyprus trees between our houses, to prevent said the trees from being burnt down. Since fireworks were illegal in that neighborhood, they couldn't do a damn thing about it.

A few days ago there were 1500 fires burning in California (evacuations, air quality at the level of hazardous in some places, etc) and there are still plenty of people who thought it would be a great idea to set them off in areas with a lot of dry vegetation. While I do think fireworks can be pretty and have enjoyed professional displays it really wasn't the year for people to be playing around with them who don't know what they were doing... not that it stopped some people.
