Argggh

This whole thing about Thomas Beatie has really brought out the anti-trans idiots and jerks.

Gods, why are people so fucking stupid? I'd expect this kind of ignorant hate from Dobson's crowd. Not from queer folk.

Ugh.

i'm not surprised at all. i got a little pissed thinking about how he gets to be legally married and can carry his own child, when other men i know get limited rights and a fight for adoption. it feels so unfair, and Beatie is there as a lens to focus the hurt and anger about what queer folk can and can't have in society today.

I hadn't even thought of that. Of course, I live in a cave and had to look up who Beatie is.

I'm sure some of that resentment is definitely what's behind some of this.

But a lot of it also seems to be coming from the usual suspects: The "straight acting" crowd who get queasy at any suggestion that sex and gender may not be either-or binaries assigned in the womb, and who whine about how the queens and dykes are ruining things for everyone else.

I wish they understood how so much of homophobia is based in rigid ideas about gender roles.

I've had a really hard time with this and I haven't come to a resolution in my head about it. I do know that I have had to redirect coversations in the break room to avoid being outed.

That's got to suck (the break room conversation part).

Needlessly concise.

There was an implied but not stated "for you, which is unfortunate" at the end of that first phrase. I'm bad with words today.

[identity profile] textualdeviance.livejournal.com 2008-04-04 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Dang, I can imagine how that would be a pain. Ugh.

As far as I'm concerned he has every right to do what he will with his body, and that includes becoming pregnant. I'm not surprised by the outcry. After all, as soon as someone steps out of the gender binary they get pounced on - and this is way outside of the binary. Not that he is the first, but he has brought it to the public eye and allowed himself to become an advocate. People are shocked and confused which is causing very harsh reactions.

I've read many threads on the subject and it pains me that so many people are against it, but that is their opinion. Even if I don't agree with it I have to respect that they see it from a different angle than I do. However, the people that are rude and hate-filled I can't stand. Honestly, where did the mentality of "live and let live" go?
