Random thought while doing the cookie/carol-listening thing...

So, if part of the reason UberChristians object to same-sex marriage, openly queer folk, etc., is because they don't want to have to tell their very young kids about sex, yet, how on earth do they explain the whole Virgin Mary thing?

Yeah, huh?

I do seem to remember a decided skipping-over-of-the-answering-of "what's a virgin?" when I was a kid in Sunday School.

But, then, those people usually told us to "Be Quiet!" when we asked questions.

This is too funny, because that's exactly how I *did* end up finding out about sex. I got curious about what a virgin was, since we were singing about it all the time at Christmas, and started asking questions and doing a bit of my own research (yeah, I was that geeky little kid who read the dictionary and encyclopedia for fun).

Of course, it also helped that my grandparents owned a farm and, technically, I'd already had some of the basics explained. But still... that really was how the major explanations got started for me.

My parents had the whole sorta hippie thing going on, so I got the basics when I was about four in response to wondering why my mom was naked when she came in to check on me after I woke up from a nightmare. Strangely, I didn't have more nightmares after I went back to sleep. ;)
